Key Question for May

by Mary Lloyd, CEO Mining Silver

It’s May already.  Time for a new key question.  This month, please give us your comments on this :

Who do you want more time with?

The fantasies most of us hold about retirement include a healthy dose of  “more time with___.”  Who are those people?  What do you want to be able to do with them?  And why can’t you do it NOW?

Tell us what you think!  Thanks.

  1. Bold Retirement Says:

Part of what we look forward to in retirement is the chance to spend time with the special people in our lives who’ve taken second place to “the job” for far too long. That is a worthy emphasis, but go into it with your eyes open. Does that person have the time for it? Is that person INTERESTED in more time with you?

One of the big deals is more time with grandkids. And that is great. But be careful of how you set it up and what you agree to, either in direct communication with their parents or tacitly. Full-time babysitting is…well….a job. Make sure you want it before you end up in the role without realizing it.

And then there is the spouse issue. If she or he has been getting along just fine all day everyday without you, you may want to have more planned than “being together.” That old joke about “I married you for better or for worse but not for breakfast, lunch, and dinner” has truth in it.

Relationships create the greatest heartaches for many once they retire. It’s too easy to assume that what you dream of is the same fantasy–and not a nightmare–for those you want to do it with. Taking the time to talk about this stuff with those you care about before you retire is important.
